Ahead of the May 5 Assembly polls in Karnataka, two documentaries being produced by the JD(S) on river Cauvery and Krishna have become a major controversy. The Congress was quick to question the propriety of such documentaries produced by the JD(S). The documentaries focus on the struggle of former PM and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda.

Congress MP from Mysore AH Vishwanath urged the Election Commission (EC) not to allow the release of the documentaries on the Cauvery and Krishna till the elections are over. Meanwhile, the Mandya district Congress has complained about it to Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha.

Meanwhile, the JD(S) chief clarified the films were not part of the poll campaign. However, the JD(S) State president HD  Kumaraswamy had said that the Cauvery and Krishna issues would be a major poll plank of the party in the elections.

According to a JD(S) source, two documentaries  plan to exploit the issue of Krishna and Cauvery and also highlights how the ruling BJP and the Congress have sacrificed the interest of the people of the State. The 30-minute each on Krishna and Cauvery are directed by award winning director Nagatihalli Chandrashekhar.

A source told The Pioneer that the documentaries were  all about Deve Gowda’s struggle to protect the interest of the people in river basin and highlight his works during his tenure as Minister for Irrigation, Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Prime Minister. The former PM narrates the history of the Cauvery and Krishna from the pre-Independence days till date.
