At a time when the ruling AIADMK is busy squandering away the goodwill among the electorate of Tamil Nadu by infighting, the DMK, the principal Opposition party is leaving no stones unturned to ensure the party’s return to power. The DMK on Thursday launched a two-day publicity drive as part of the 75th anniversary of Murasoli, the official mouthpiece of the party, founded and edited by former Chief Minister and party president M Karunanidhi.
Though Karunanidhi, suffering from age-related health issues, could not make it to the venue, speakers after speakers, who addressed the meeting paid rich tributes to the 94-year-old Dr Kalaignar (as he prefers to be addressed) for the success of the newspaper as well as the DMK.
What stood out in the opening day of the Murasoli anniversary was the number of celebrities in Tamil Nadu who graced the event. The cynosure of the show was Rajinikanth, the superstar of Tamil cinema who has made his intentions clear for an innings in politics. Though Rajinikanth did not speak and opted to be seated among the audience, the biggest ovation was reserved for him. He was honoured by Stalin. Kamal Haasan, the other superstar of Tamil films, who is having a running battle with the Palaniswami Government over the issue of corruption was also present in the stage and delivered a speech.
