In an important development in Madhya Pradesh politics, former chief ministers Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath met, signalling a truce after days of public tension. The meeting has generated strong interest in political circles, particularly as the Congress is attempting to revive its organisation in the state ahead of major electoral battles. The meeting took place at the residence of Kamal Nath in New Delhi on Thursday night.
Digvijaya Singh, who shared details of the meeting on Facebook and ‘X’, sought to underline the depth of his long association with Nath. He wrote that in political life, differences of opinion are inevitable, but there has never been any bitterness between the two.
Singh reminded that their political relationship has stretched over nearly five decades, during which they have consistently worked shoulder to shoulder for the Congress. He stressed that both leaders have been honoured by the party’s central leadership and have enjoyed the trust of the people and expressed confidence that they would continue to serve the public together under the Congress banner.
The need for such a reassurance came after remarks made by Singh in a podcast interview caused controversy. Singh had claimed that Jyotiraditya Scindia’s departure from the Congress in 2020 was the result of Kamal Nath’s style of functioning. The comment had sparked a sharp reaction from Nath, who dismissed the charge, saying that raking up old issues serves no purpose at a time when the party needs to look ahead.
Nath, in turn, alleged that Scindia’s frustration stemmed from feeling sidelined in the government, and that his loyalists believed Singh was exercising greater influence than the chief minister. According to Nath, this growing dissatisfaction among Scindia’s supporters eventually triggered defections on a scale that led to the collapse of the Congress Government in Madhya Pradesh. The exchange of blame between two senior leaders had created unease within the party rank and file.
Their recent meeting, therefore, is being widely interpreted as an effort to ease tensions and project unity. Singh’s public message about the absence of any enmity between them was seen as an attempt to close the chapter and silence speculation about a widening rift.
Congress spokesperson KK Mishra welcomed the meeting, saying that both Singh and Nath are pillars of the state Congress, and that their coming together is vital for the party’s prospects in the future. Political observers note that while personal equations between the two leaders have seen turbulence, reconciliation is crucial if the Congress hopes to present itself as a serious challenger to the ruling BJP in the State.
The optics of their meeting suggest that the party is attempting to bridge internal divides and present a united front at a time when its organisational revival is the need of the hour.
