Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee will take a ‘wait and watch’ policy towards the Narendra Modi Government before it takes any decision on future course of action, the Trinamool Congress supremo has told her close party aides, inside sources say.
According to a senior TMC leader who was present in a recently held high-level party meeting Banerjee “has asked us to observe the functioning of the Modi Government and its reaction among the people before we can decide on a line of action.”
If the Government took any decision "which is anti-people then naturally our party will oppose it with full might as the basic ideology of our leader is to remain by the side of the people" and "if takes decision which are not unfriendly to the people then we will decide our line of action accordingly" the leader who is also a State Minister said quoting the Chief Minister.
On what led to the Trinamool supremo’s decision to bring about abrupt and drastic changes both in the Government and the organisation the leader said, “Didi understands the pulse of the people and the organisation better than anyone. It is because of her that the party has risen to this level. So the entire leadership has left things on her and would work as she wants.”
The leader however remained non-committal on the recent rebellious statements by powerful East Midnapore satrap and Tamluk MP Subhendu Adhikary who had been removed as the Trinamool Youth Congress president. Adhikary had openly lashed out at a section of the leadership for trying to convert the party into a ‘personal fiefdom.’
Adhikary who had been Banerjee’s Nandigram spearhead and whose father Sisir Adhikary was a former Union Minister and a sitting MP from the neighbouring Contai seat had a day after his removal from his post openly lambasted a section of leaders who reportedly have the ears of the Chief Minister saying, “I congratulate many of these leaders for their magnificent victory in the elections but every one knows how they won the polls.”
While the Opposition left, BJP and the Congress — that had severely criticised the Commission and the TMC for rigged elections — rejoiced at Adhikary’s statement the Trinamool MP on Monday softened his rhetoric saying he had "never targetted any of our leaders but the CPI(M).”
On the issue of the BJP’s surge in the State, Banerjee is known to have told the leaders to “concentrate on people-to-people contact and address their grievances.”
Meanwhile, the CM, who was holding Government-level meetings in North Bengal on Monday, declared the Dooars town of Alipurduar will soon be converted into a district.
