New Delhi: Delhi is preparing for a major INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, with opposition parties expecting a large turnout for their protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The rally is being organised over allegations of electoral irregularities, including claims of voter deletions during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have also demanded Kumar’s resignation.
The programme is expected to include a march from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction to Ramlila Maidan, followed by the rally. Opposition leaders have projected a turnout of up to 10 lakh people, while police estimates put the expected crowd at around 50,000.
More than 4,000 police personnel, along with Central Armed Police Forces personnel, are expected to be deployed along the route and around the venue. Ramlila Maidan has been divided into 14 security zones.
More than 200 CCTV cameras, drones and body-worn cameras will be used for surveillance. A control room has also been set up to monitor the arrangements.
Traffic restrictions and diversions are expected across parts of central Delhi between 10 am and 5 pm. Commuters have been advised to avoid key stretches, including Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg and Minto Road.
The rally follows a symbolic public impeachment programme organised by the INDIA bloc on Saturday, during which opposition leaders adopted a resolution listing their allegations against the CEC.
