Defence panel slams Govt for slow work

PNS

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has pulled up the Government for virtually no progress in constructing at least 14 strategic important railway lines, most of them in the east, to counter vastly superior Chinese rail network across the lAC.

The panel in its report on Threat Perception On Borders tabled in Parliament last week noted that the Railways have stated that it would not be able to proceed with this project unless it is fully funded by the defence ministry or Finance Ministry.

The cost of the project is worth over Rs 55,000 crore and the Railways has also said these lines are highly un-remunerative and the parliamentary panel said the issue is now under consideration of the Empowered Committee on Border Infrastructure headed by Cabinet Secretary.
