On the third anniversary of the deadly clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley, Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, paid homage on Thursday to the 20 Indian Army personnel who lost their lives in the June 15, 2020 brawl, emphasising that their courage and sacrifice will inspire future generations.  The clash in Galwan Valley marked the most serious military conflict between India and China in decades.

“Today, we pay homage to those brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting our nation in the Galwan Valley. Their courage, bravery, and sacrifice will continue to inspire coming generations,” tweeted the Defence Minister.

The border standoff in eastern Ladakh escalated significantly following the clashes on June 15, 2020. While China officially acknowledged the deaths of five Chinese military officers and soldiers, it is believed that the actual Chinese casualties were much higher.

Both the Indian and Chinese militaries are engaged in talks to de-escalate tensions along the frontier. Despite some disengagement in certain areas, the two sides remain locked in a standoff at a few friction points.

In response to the escalated tension, the Indian Army has taken several measures to enhance its operational capabilities in the eastern sector. These measures include the procurement of all-terrain vehicles, precision-guided ammunition, high-tech surveillance equipment, radars, and weapons.

To address the ongoing standoff in eastern Ladakh, the two countries have conducted 18 rounds of high-level talks.

The objective of these discussions is to advance the disengagement process in the remaining friction points and restore peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Extensive diplomatic and military talks have resulted in the disengagement of troops from several areas.

India has consistently emphasized that normalizing ties with China is contingent on peace in the border areas.
