CPM's filmstar MP 'ready' to support Modi in good work

Filmstar Innocent, CPI(M)’s Independent MP-designate representing Kerala’s Chalakkudy constituency, has said that he will support Narendra Modi on the good things he does as Prime Minister.

Innocent, who defeated Congress’s national spokesman PC Chacko in Chalakkudy, said in Thrissur on Tuesday that supporting Modi on his good deeds would be necessary to bring resources and developments to Kerala. “Doing this is necessary for getting anything for Kerala from the Centre,” he said.

“The usual practice of Opposition is to oppose the Government even if it does good things. That attitude should change,” Innocent said. Stating that he would hope that Modi would do good things for the country, he said, “If we oppose Modi for anything and everything, people will recognise our falsehood and go with him.”

Asked whether he thought Modi would create polarisation in India, he answered in the negative. “It is not necessary that things that never happen in other countries should happen in our country. These are unnecessary anxieties,” he said. He said he would communicate with the CPI(M) if his stands as a Parliament member went against those of the CPI(M).

Innocent, who has never had a steady political background, had surprised Kerala when he defeated Chacko, a Congress leader of national stature, by a margin of 13,884 votes. Chacko, who was elected from the Thrissur constituency in 2009, had opted to contest from Chalakkudy hoping of certain victory.

A district leader of the CPI(M) in Kochi, who had opposed the party leadership's decision to field Innocent in Chalakkudy, responded to the filmstar's statements on Modi by saying, “I wonder what other things he is going to say in the future. I think he would keep embarrassing the party.”
