Political violence resurfaced in Kasaragod, the northernmost Kerala district, after a fairly long period of relative calm when a 25-year-old activist of the DYFI, youth wing of the CPI(M), was stabbed to death late on Sunday night. Two persons have been held for the killing. The CPI(M) blamed the RSS-BJP for the incident but the BJP leadership rejected the allegation.
DYFI worker Aboobacker Siddique of Songal village near Uppala in the Manjeswaram Police limits in Kasaragod, was attacked by two motorcycle-borne men at Uppala at about 11.00 PM Sunday. Though he was rushed to a hospital in the southern Karnataka city of Mangalore with deep wounds in the stomach, life could not be saved, police officials said.
A Sreenivas, Superintendent of Police, Kasaragod said security had been tightened in the Uppala area and other sensitive places in the district in order to prevent further incidents of violence. Several areas of Kasaragod district are known to be extremely sensitive but no major incident of political violence had taken place in the district for nearly two years.
