CPI MP Slams Arrest of Kerala Nuns, Calls India a “Banana Republic”

Press Trust of India

CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar strongly criticised the arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced conversion, calling the case “strange and shocking.” Citing Section 143 of the BNS, Kumar questioned the legitimacy of the case and accused the BJP-led government of targeting minorities. He remarked, “Has this country become a banana republic?” and vowed continued resistance. The incident has sparked political outrage, with the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) expressing alarm over increasing hostility towards minorities. Meanwhile, BJP’s Kerala unit distanced itself from the Chhattisgarh CM’s justification.
