In a major development in the fund embezzlement case on Monday, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate allowed Ahmedabad Crime Branch to add two more charges including forgery and fraudulently using forged documents as genuine against social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand.
With the court’s permission, the Crime Branch will add Section 467 (Forgery) and 471 (fraudulently or dishonestly using a forged document as genuine) of IPC in the FIR No-1/2014 filed against them recently.
last week, the investigation officer had requested the Metropolitan court to add these sections against Teesta and her husband. Teesta allegedly collected Rs 1.51 crore in funds through her two NGOs — Sabrang Trust and Citizen for Justice & Peace (CJP) — from domestic and international donors with a promise to convert riot-hit Gulbarg society into a museum. Instead, it is alleged that she used the funds collected for constructing the museum for her personal expenses.
The Ahmedabad Police had registered an FIR in 2014, after a complaint filed by former residents of Gulberg Society a year-and-a-half ago in 2013.
The residents apparently claimed that money collected in their name had not reached them.
