Congo Hutus, women, kids saved by Indian peacekeeping troops

The Indian Peacekeeping Mission deployed under the UN aegis in Congo saved local Hutus including women and children after they were surrounded by rebels.

The Indian troops also assisted in thwarting a major attack on National Army of Congo(FARDC) by Mai Mai rebels.

In the first incident on November 8, the Indian army base deployed about 50 km away from the Hutus hamlets received information about threat by armed groups to the population.

The quick reaction team of the Army rushed there and brought out the Hutus to safer location despite heavy presence of armed groups, army officials said here on Thursday.

As regards the second incident on November 12, they said the troops prevented a major attack on the Congo army camp.

More than 2,600 Indian peacekeepers are deployed in Democratic Republic of Congo under the UN charter.  It is the largest and complex UN peacekeeping mission, they added.
