Clear picture of cyclonic storm to emerge in 48 hrs

A clear picture of a possible cyclonic storm would be known within 48 hours after the low pressure formed over Tenasserim Coast and adjoining Andaman Sea concentrates into a depression, said India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) cyclone warning division Director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Monday.

“If the low pressure concentrates into deep depression, we will able to read the movement of the cyclonic circulation, its impact and magnitude,” Mohapatra said, adding, “There is no immediate impact of the circulation on Odisha.”

According to the local Met office, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Gulf of Siam (Thailand) and its neighbourhood has already led to the formation of a low pressure area over Tenasserim Coast and adjoining Andaman Sea at 8.30 am on Monday and could trigger rain and thundershowers at one or two places over Odisha during the next 24 hours.

“It would concentrate into a well-marked low pressure area during next 24 hours and further concentrate into a Depression during subsequent 24 hours,” the Met office sources said.

IMD Bhubaneswar Director Sarat Sahu said the cyclonic circulation would move in the north-west direction while gathering strength en-route to reach the Andaman and Nicobar islands on October 10 from where it would further intensify and move towards Odisha.
