Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke was released on conditional bail on Saturday after signing a peace bond, a day after Delhi Police detained him ahead of the party’s proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march at Connaught Place.
Dipke was detained on Friday, October 16, while on his way to Central Park in Connaught Place, where the party had planned to organise the march at 5 pm. Police had served him a notice prohibiting the gathering, citing concerns over public order, traffic congestion and the possible disruption of commercial activity.
According to reports, Dipke was produced before a Special Executive Magistrate at Mandir Marg on Saturday, following which he was granted conditional bail. He was released after completing the required formalities and signing a peace bond.
The police action followed Dipke’s refusal to comply with the notice prohibiting the march. The proposed event involved calls to gather and wave the national flag. Dipke questioned the grounds for the restrictions, arguing that merely calling for people to unfurl the Tricolour should not invite police action.
The march was organised amid escalating protests by the CJP and other groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The latest detention came days after Dipke and fellow CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained on October 10 ahead of a protest in Delhi. They were released the following day after furnishing surety bonds and undertaking to maintain peace and good behaviour for one year.
