With protection of gangster Chhota Rajan being top priority, the security agencies have decided to bring him to the national Capital and the CBI will keep him in custody initially before any other police force is allowed to take him for investigating its respective cases.
Security arrangements have been beefed up at the agency headquarters where Rajan is likely to be kept after arrival from Indonesia. Upon his arrival here, Rajan may be shifted to a hospital as he requires dialysis on a regular basis.
Safe houses of the Intelligence agencies have also been readied to house him in case a last minute change is required in view of unseen exigencies, a source said.
Senior officials of the Special Cell of Delhi police held an hour-long meeting last evening to discuss transport and security of the underworld don. Regular security drills were carried out to identify any possible loop hole in the security apparatus, sources said.
It has been decided that Rajan will not be taken directly to Mumbai from Indonesia, where he was arrested last week.
The agency team is waiting for the first available window to bring back the don as ash cloud arising out of volcano eruptions near Bali have halted flight operations from there. The sources said as soon as the flight operations resume, the team will move out with Rajan.
Rajan, who was arrested in Bali on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes including murder, extortion, smuggling and drug trafficking.
Rajan, whose original name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, was arrested in Bali on a Red Corner Notice (RCN) issued by Interpol in 1993 at the behest of CBI and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the police in Indonesia.
In the absence of an extradition treaty, Indian authorities have already furnished documents to their Indonesian counterparts confirming Rajan's Indian identity to facilitate his deportation.
The Indian team, comprising officers from CBI, Mumbai and Delhi police, had reached Bali on Sunday with a detailed dossier on 55-year-old Rajan and his involvement in various crimes in India.
