A fire broke out inside the Chemistry lab at the Indian Institute of Technology Campus, Delhi on Monday morning. No one was injured in the incident as the fire was confined to only one block and the building was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Students present in a nearby boy's hostel also vacated the place.
According to fire officials the fire was reported from the chemistry lab situated on the third floor. "The fire department received a call at 11:25am and within 45 minutes the flames were doused. Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot," said a fire official.
People living in the vicinity of the campus said they heard at least four minor blasts during the blaze. “The chemistry lab had flammable chemicals like any other laboratory but they were there in small quantities. We are looking into all possibilities to examine the cause of fire,” said AK Sharma Chief of Delhi Fire Services. The blast sound could be probably the batteries which were kept in the laboratory which exploded due to heat.
