Dejected with the response of the Omar Abdullah-led alliance Government in J&K, the kin of Chamel Singh, who was tortured to death inside the Kot lakhpat Central Jail in lahore on January 15, 2013, have now decided to knock at the doorsteps of the President of India seeking adequate compensation and ‘martyr’ status for their father.
To wake up Ministers of the Union Government from their deep slumber, the kin of Chamel Singh have also dispatched a similar letter to the office of the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister highlighting plight of the family and the trauma they have to undergo in the aftermath of the torturous death of their father.
“After we failed to get any positive response from the State Government, we have now approached the highest office of the President seeking justice and adequate compensation”, said Deepak Singh, one of the four sons of Chamel Singh.
Highlighting the plight of his poor family Deepak Singh said, “After the death of Sarabjit Singh inside Pakistan jail, the Government of India announced a compensation of Rs25 lakh for his kin. In addition, the Punjab Government accorded ‘martyr’ status to the ‘son-of-the-soil’ and also announced additional compensation of Rs1 crore. Three days’ mourning was also announced in the State but in our case we continue to run from the pillar to post seeking justice and adequate compensation”. Singh said even the Pakistan Government is yet to hand over the copy of the post-mortem report to us. The State Government too has not completed the formalities as they are also awaiting copy of the post-mortem report conducted in Pakistan.
Deepak said, “After learning about the death of our father we have approached all the offices of the State Government and submitted our application seeking justice but till date no one has responded to our pleas.
Deepak Singh said his mother is pinning all her hopes on the office of the President and the Prime Minister that they would consider our plea on humanitarian grounds and deliver justice. He said that along with all these Central leaders they had dispatched letters to the office of the Chief Minister and the Deputy CM in J&K.
