NEW DELHI: The population enumeration phase of Census 2027 will run from January 10 to February 28, covering nearly 50 days, including a 15-day self-enumeration window. The extended schedule is longer than the 20 days used in the previous census.

The house-to-house enumeration schedule for poll-bound states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Punjab, will span 35 days.

The second phase of the census will include 40 questions, compared with 29 in the 2011 exercise. The questionnaire is expected to cover details relating to caste, Aadhaar and voter identity cards, among other information.

The expanded exercise is expected to involve a larger data collection process across the country. The longer enumeration period may also help officials manage the increased number of questions and the scale of the exercise.

Census 2027 is being conducted after a delayed decennial population count that was originally due in 2021 but was postponed.
