After the INX Media bribe case, CBI has summoned former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti to appear before it on Thursday in the Aircel-Maxis case. CBI has already questioned Chidambaram in the case directly monitored by the Supreme Court's 2G Bench and now the agency has summoned his son after the Enforcement Directorate found that Karti's companies had accepted $2 lakh from the three subsidiaries of Maxis. The latest development of summoning son Karti is indication that CBI is going to file chargesheet in the Aircel-Maxis case, as assured to the Supreme Court on the petition filed BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.
In the Aircel- Maxis case, Chidambaram was accused by CBI for violating the norms of FIPB clearance. The value of the FIPB deal was more than `3600 crore and it was mandated to be ratified by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). As per the norms, foreign investment of above `600 crore has to be vetted by CCEA. But it wasn't done in the Aircel-Maxis case.
Though Chidambaram was questioned by CBI in December 2014, the agency did not file chargesheet. The petitioner Subramanian Swamy has accused CBI of delaying the case and probing only former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran's role in the case. later in April 2017, the CBI told the apex court that they are probing Chidambaram's role and would finish the probe soon.
