The CBI on Monday questioned Joint Director of Enforcement Directorate

(ED) JP Singh after searches were conducted at his premises last week following registration of a regular case relating to an alleged bribery case against him.

The case was registered by the agency following allegations by some businessmen in Gujarat that Singh had been demanding bribes while investigating a case related to IPl betting probe. Singh, who is posted as Joint Director in Directorate’s Ahmedabad branch, was summoned to the CBI headquarters here and questioned by the officials of CBI’s Anti-Corruption Bureau, official sources said here on Monday.

Singh is a 2000-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of Customs and Excise wing. The CBI is also mulling over to seek administrative action against Singh for the alleged professional misconduct during the probe into the IPl betting case.

The ED on its part has already sent a report to the Finance Ministry for ‘immediate action’.

The ED’s Ahmedabad unit was probing two important cases — Rs2,000 crore IPl betting scandal and Rs5,000 crore money laundering case against alleged hawala operator Afroz Fatta in which the suspects allegedly sought favours.

Singh is a named accused in the case registered under provisions of criminal conspiracy under IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.

Sources said Singh was grilled over the allegations made in the case and the seizures made during searches at his premises.
