In the race for the BCCI top post, N Srinivasan faced a slight hiccup on Monday when the Supreme Court asked him whether the charges of betting against his son-in-law could be an obstacle for his election as BCCI chairman scheduled for November 20.
The query was posed by Court even as a decision on Srinivasan's fate was deferred to Friday. The bench headed by Justice TS Thakur said that it was yet to open the sealed cover containing the report by Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee.
Ahead of the Friday hearing, the bench asked lawyers appearing for Srinivasan, BCCI and Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) to state whether the allegations against Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of Srinivasan will have bearing on the election by which Srinivasan seeks to retain control over the cricket body.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal on behalf of Srinivasan told Court that it will have no bearing while senior lawyer Harish Salve who represented CAB argued to the contrary. Both reserved their arguments for Friday as neither the Court nor the parties claimed to have any information about the sealed cover report.
Salve said that he will restrict his arguments to the content of the report while Sibal submitted that whatever be the verdict of the Committee will be accepted by his client.
