BJP sweeps Mira-Bhayandar civic body polls with 61 seats

Continuing its winning spree, the ruling BJP on Monday captured power in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), by bagging an impressive 61 seats in the 95-member civic body.

The NBMC became the 12th municipal corporation in the state that it annexed during the last seven months. Earlier, it had won power in the municipal corporations of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Nagpur, Solapur, Ulhasnagar Akola, Amravati, latur, Chandrapur and Panvel.

Nearly doubling its 2012 poll tally of 32 seats, the BJP emerged a clear winner in the NMBC polls, leaving all its rivals far behind.

The Shiv Sena, which had contested the NBMC polls on its own strength, won 22 seats, as against 10 seats bagged by the Congress and two seats by Independents. The Congress had won 18 seats in the 2012 polls.

Shockingly, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP and Raj Thackeray-headed MNS failed to win even one seat in the poll. Between the two parties, the NCP’s performance was pathetic, considering it had won 26 seats in the 2012 polls.

“Huge win for @BJP4India at #MiraBhayandar ! Now, development is certain. We will certainly live up to the expectations of people.. Congratulations to leaders & karyakartas for spectacular win! I thank people of #MiraBhayandar for having faith in us! I assure speedy devpt,” an elated Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted.

“#MiraBhayandar Municipal Corptn election victory is because of wave of ‘vishwas & vikas’ created by PM @narendramodi ji &team BJP’s efforts!,” Fadnavis said in another tweet.
