Expressing concern over the growing incidents of rape and sexual harassment to women in Assam, former Union Minister and sitting lok Sabha MP from Guwahati, Bijoya Chakraborty on Friday suggested capital punishment for those involved in rape.

Chakraborty said this while interacting with newsmen at the BJP headquarters in Guwahati on Friday and added that while earlier there was no reports of any rape incidents in Assam, the incidents of rape and sexual harassment to women has been increasing in past few years.

Chakraborty also expressed concern over the fact that certain political parties in the country has been trying to politicise the heinous crime like rape and slammed the Congress party who had recently organised a candlelight protest in New Delhi protesting against rape.

“There is a spate in incidents of rape in Assam in past few years and if you see, you’ll notice that majority of those involved in rape belong to a particular religious community. I feel that we must take a decision either shot them (rapists) dead or hang them till death after found in guilty in trial,” she said.

“Otherwise it will be difficult to save our daughters and daughter in laws even two year old girls and minors from the rapists,” Chakraborty said adding that there are loopholes in the system and that rapists often evade punishments due to these loopholes and rape again after six months.

The veteran BJP leader also appealed the people of the society to be aware about these kinds of crimes against women and said that they must join hands in preventing such crimes.

“I believe capital punishment is the best to deter people from rape. There has to be fast trial for rape cases and rapists should be awarded capital punishments immediately after the trial,” she said adding that the Assam Government led by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has already taken some steps to make a strong act to stop the menace of rape.
