BJP embarks on T'gana Vimochna Yatra today

Omer Farooq

In a bid to pressurise the Telangana Government to celebrate September 17 as official State liberation Day the State BJP president K lakshman will kick off his seven-day long Telangana Vimochna Yatra from Hyderabad on Friday.

For the  BJP its an annual feature to raise the demand for official celebration of the day when Nizam Dominion was annexed into Indian union through an army action but this year the saffron party has gone one step farther by organising a yatra.

Amidst the fears that the BJP was trying to cause a communal polarisation in the name of liberation Day, State BJP president will start his Yatra with worship at Durga temple at Basheerbagh in city and later visit the Telangana martyrs memorial.

During the seven day Yatra he and other BJP leaders will visit various places across Telangana where the party claims violence had taken place during the fight against Nizam rule. On Saturday he will be in Parkala to pay tributes to Martyrs.

While the successive state Governments have been celebrating September 17 as Hyderabad Integration Day, the right wing Hindu organisations want the day to be celebrated as ‘liberation Day’.

BJP has been looking at the occasion from a communal prism, the fight of Hindu majority against a Muslim minority ruler — The Nizam.  "Our demand is not new and every year we have been raising it. We urge all the political parties to come forward and support the cause", said lakshman.

The BJP alleges that the Congress which ruled the State most of the time avoided official celebration due to its policy of appeasement. "Even TRS had promised that if the Telangana State was formed  they will celebrate the liberation Day but forgot the promise once it came to power,” he said.

To give a national profile to the event, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will address a public meeting to mark the conclusion of Yatra.

As the BJP has vowed to come to power in Telangana in 2019 the stirring of the regional and religious emotions in the name of liberation Day has assumed political colours.
