Although the BJP is in coalition with regional party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in Dispur, yet both the political parties are set to contest the forthcoming panchayat polls in Assam separately.

The saffron party who is leading the coalition Government in Assam said the party is going to fight the panchayat polls alone even though they are in partners with two regional political parties in Assam — the AGP and the Bodoland Peoples’ front (BPF).

The saffron party held a crucial meeting of the party’s poll management committee for the forthcoming polls in Guwahati on Sunday and said that the party is going to the panchayat polls alone despite the fact that the party is a partner of the AGP and the BJP at Dispur.

“We are going to fight the panchayat polls alone this time. Both the AGP and BPF are our coalition partners and that partnership continues. However, we are going to fight the panchayat polls alone. This will help us ascertain the peoples’ confidence on the party and also about the weakness of the party,” said party president Ranjit Dass while speaking at the meeting.

Meanwhile, the AGP has also instituted the party’s panchayat poll management committee and said that the party is getting ready to fight the panchayat polls alone. The regional party also held a crucial meeting at the party headquarters recent and formed a five member committee under the leade4rship of former minister Gunin Hazarika.

“Not only the forthcoming panchayat polls, we are also going to contest the 2019 lok Sabha polls and the 2021 assembly polls alone,” said senior AGP leader and former health minister Dr. Kamala Kalita-indicating that something is not right in the alliance.

It may be mentioned here that AGP who has 14 members in the Assam legislative assembly is one of the partners of the BJP led alliance Government in Assam. Another alliance partner BPF has 12 members in the Assembly while the BJP has 61 members in the 126-member House.
