Bihar loses 250 MBBS seats in three colleges, approaches SC

The Bihar Government approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging the decision of the Centre to deny admission to 250 MBBS candidates in three of its Government medical colleges. The Vacation Bench of Justices UU lalit and Deepak Gupta posted the matter for Thursday.

The State was aggrieved by the decision of the Medical Council of India (MCI) that affected medical admissions to three of its colleges - Government Medical College, Bettiah, Vardhman Institute of Medical Sciences, Pawapuri, and Anugrah Narayan Medical College, Gaya.

The decision of the medical regulator was made against 82 medical colleges across the country after inspections found these colleges to be lacking in several aspects.

The State Government approached the apex court seeking a fresh inspection in order to save 100 admissions each to its colleges in Bettiah and Pawapuri, and 50 seats in Gaya college.

These admissions were of 2013-14 when the Government initially gave them approval to admit students.

In 2015 too, the MCI had found deficiencies in faculty and teaching posts in these colleges and had denied permission to continue with their admission. However, the MCI later allowed the admission to continue.

The latest inspections were conducted in February when the three colleges failed to have effective teaching faculty strength.

Several departments in these colleges did not have requisite professors to conduct courses.
