Beheaded martyr's kin still await recompense

PNS

Family of lance Naik Hemraj of Rajputana Rifles, who was beheaded by Pakistani commandos in a raid in Kashmir on January 8, on Thursday asked the Government to fulfill its promise to give them land, a gas agency and Government jobs for his brothers. The ghastly incident had led to countrywide uproar and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that it will not be business as usual with Pakistan.

Hemraj’s wife Dharamvati and his two brothers met minister of state for defence Jitendra Singh here in Congress Headquarters and gave a memorandum listing their demands.  Sources said he promised to look into the matter.

Incidentally, the slain soldier’s wife had gone on hunger strike after her husband was killed demanding a memorial in Hemraj’s name and development of his village near Mathura, UP. She ended her fast when the government promised to fulfill all her demands including three acres of land for the family.  More than three months have passed but these promises are yet to be fulfilled, they said.
