Babul Supriyo charged under Arms Act

PNS

In what could be a fair indication of the BJP going great guns in the industry belt of Asansol, the police had charged party candidate and singer Babul Supriyo under Arms Act allegedly “at the behest of the ruling Trinamool Congress.”

He has been asked to appear personally at the Raniganj Police Station within 48 hours, police said. The incident refers to a heated exchange between the BJP men and Trinamool supporters at a village near Raniganj a couple of days ago.

The BJP resented when the local Trinamool workers refused the famed singer entry in the village to campaign for himself. In the melee, Babul Suprioy’s driver was roughed up by the Trinamool men, he later alleged. Without allowing the incident to die down the ruling party filed an FIR with the local police station and the police immediately slapped Section 26/27 of the Arms Act against the celebrity candidate sources said.

Meanwhile the BJP had written to the EC against what it called the “partition ways of the district magistrate and theinspector in-charge of the Raniganj police station” asking for their removal, party sources said. The Trinamool had earlier lodged a complaint against him for campaigning in drunken state but later he was given a clean chit by the district authorities.

“These are the results of the massive euphoria Babul Supriyo has created in the constituency. The Trinamool is afraid that they will lose from here so they are taking all these nasty ploys” said BJP State chief Rahul Sinha adding the party had requested the policeseeking another 48 hours time for him to appear.
