Assam’s prominent regional political party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Sunday re-elected its current president and State agriculture Minister Atul Bora as the party president for the second consecutive term.

The party’s general house meeting was held at the party headquarters at Ambari in Guwahati today, which unanimously elected Bora as the party president. Representatives of almost all the district committees of the party supported Bora’s name as the party president.

The regional party, which was formed in the aftermath of historical six year long anti-foreigner movement in Assam, also abolished its one-man-one-post policy so that Bora could be elected as the party president.

“All the district committees of the party supported the name of the current president as the party president and accordingly he was elected in the post for the second term. We have full confidence on him and hope that the regional party will scale new heights under the leadership of Bora,” said senior AGP leader and former Union Minister Biren Baishya.

“I am happy that the all the party members have trust on me. I would try my level best to strengthen the regional party with cooperation from everyone in the party,” Bora said while addressing the media after the general house meeting on Sunday.

The regional party, which formed government in Assam for two terms, had been in opposition since 2001. The regional party had formed an alliance with the BJP ahead of the state assembly elections in Assam in April this year despite severe opposition from grassroots party workers. However, the alliance worked in favour of the regional party and they could improve their tally to 14 in the April polls.

The ruling BJP led alliance government in Assam had accommodated two AGP leaders—including party president Atul Bora and working president Keshav Mahanta in the cabinet. The regional party is now demanding to accommodate two more party legislators in the cabinet.
