Assam Police apprehended 24 foreign nationals suspected of entering India illegally from different homestays in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday.

“Most of Assam: pandal-hopping. Assam Police: illegal hunting! Based on tip-offs, 24 illegal immigrants were caught hiding in different homestays,” Sarma said in a social media post.

He did not disclose the nationality of the apprehended persons, the locations where they were detained or the countries from which they had allegedly entered India.

“Assam welcomes Puja revellers but for illegals, stringent action as per law will be taken. @assampolice remains alert, 24x7,” the chief minister said.

Assam's Sribhumi, Cachar, Dhubri and South Salmara-Mankachar districts share a 267.5-km international border with Bangladesh.

Sutarkandi in Sribhumi district has an integrated check post (ICP). The Northeast has three ICPs along the India-Bangladesh border, with the other two located at Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhaura in Tripura.

The region also has an ICP at Darranga in Assam along the India-Bhutan border.
