With over 40 lakh people remaining out of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), the ruling BJP in Assam has appealed the NRC authorities to appoint more experienced indigenous people so that no genuine Indian citizen’s names are excluded while preparing the final NRC.

President of Assam Unit of the BJP, Ranjit Dass said this to The Pioneer today and added due to lack of knowledge or limited knowledge of some of the Circle project Supervisor of the NRC names of some indigenous people including the sons of soils were left out from the draft NRC published by the Assam government on July 30.

“We have observed that some of Circle Project Supervisor of the NRC has very limited knowledge about the indigenous tribal population of the state and also about genuine Indian citizens from other states of the country. This is one reason that names of many indigenous people and those from other states of India were left out of the draft NRC,” Dass said while speaking to this correspondent today.

“So we request the NRC authorities to appoint 100 percent indigenous people in position such as Circle Project Supervisor in future. Only then we will get a 100 percent correct and flawless NRC,” he said adding that it is unfortunate that indigenous tribes and genuine Indian citizens who had migrated and lived in Assam since generations failed to find their names in the NRC.

Dass said that he has observed that in those areas where the appointed Circle Project Supervisors are not a local, more names of indigenous people were left out of the draft NRC.

The draft NRC published on July 30 included the names of 2.89 crore people but left 40,07,707 people out of the document after finding some discrepancies in their applications.

It may be mentioned here that the draft NRC which was updated under direct monitoring of the Supreme Court has left the names of some indigenous sons of the soils in Assam like the Bodos, Rabhas, Garos and many others. A lot of Hindi Speaking people, who had migrated to Assam since long time back from different parts of the country, also failed to find their names in the draft NRC.
