As it is raining “fake doctors” in Bengal, the Crime Investigation Department on Monday picked up yet another medico practising for the last several years sans a genuine medical degree.

After the arrest of  Subhendu Mukherjee and Ajay Tewari, the police have netted Howrah’s Ramashankar Singh, an alleged fake doctor, on Monday. He was picked up from Bauria police station area, said police, adding that the man has been coning patients for quite a few years now and attended a number of chambers in the city.

Singh’s arrest came a couple of days after the police arrested Ajay Tewari who had been practicing as an endocrinologist at a top private hospital.

Both Mukherjee and Tewari, commerce graduates, tended to make full commercial use of the medical profession by posing as doctors for the last few years, said a CID Deputy SP, adding Tewari like Naren Pandey, a self-styled dermatologist, associated with another top private hospital for the last 20 years were treating patients with impunity.

The State Medical Council has submitted a report to the Government on at least 10 more doctors practicing in and around Kolkata, said Trinamool leader Dr Nirmal Maji adding that the intelligence agencies were keeping an eye on another 500 doctors in various parts of the State.

“There are many doctors who have been claiming that they have obtained their degrees not only from other parts of India but also from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh. When we counter-checked with Dhaka, we

found that their claims were false,” he said adding the Government was also zeroing in on a number of self-styled councils that had been providing fake degrees for alternative medicine enabling these doctors to carry on their fake network.

Maji said, the doctors practicing in Bengal would soon be asked to resubmit their credentials.

“In fact many of them have already been asked to submit their certificates and fill up a duly prescribed form,” a Health Department official said adding some senior officials of the Ministry were under the CID scanner for giving appointment to fake doctors in Government Hospitals.
