Maintaining that he had resigned from his Constitutional post as Maharashtra’s Advocate General of his own free will, an unfazed Shrihari Aney on Tuesday attributed his resignation to “conflict of duty” and “institutional stability”. “In keeping with my belief that the Advocate General’s prime function is to protect the interest of the people, and that the legislature must function if the interest of the people is to be protected, my final act as Advocate General which would be most in the interest of the people of the state was to resign the post,” Aney said in a statement put out soon after his submitted his resignation to Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao.
Aney, whose resignation came in the wake of strident protests in both the Houses of Maharashtra legislature over his statement demanding statehood for Marathwada region, said: “let me make it clear that neither His Excellency the Governor nor the Honourable Chief Minister asked me for my resignation. There are two reasons for my resignation. The first has to do with conflict of duty. The second concerns institutional stability,”
