PNS

Taking cognisance of a letter petition written by senior advocate Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi demanding court-monitored probe of the heinous Unnao rape case and the death of the victim’s father in judicial custody, Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar of Allahabad High Court appointed senior advocate Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi as amicus curiae to represent the victim and fixed the hearing in the case for April 12, 2018. The Bench also said that Advocate General or one of the Additional Advocate Generals to remain present during the course of hearing to apprise the court about the incident in question and action taken upon it. The Court further directed concerned officials to preserve the body of the victim’s deceased father, if it had not been already cremated. In a letter dated April 11, 2018, senior advocate Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi demanded a Court monitored investigation to ensure fair investigation of the case as the matter involved an MlA of the ruling party. The Court observed, “What is disturbing as submitted by Mr. Chaturvedi is that the father of the prosecutrix, for no reason, came to be arrested and was in custody, where he was mercilessly beaten and he succumbed to injuries on Tuesday. We fail to understand why the Investigating Agency instead of arresting accused persons, arrested the complainant in connection with this case.” The Court then directed to register the letter as a PIl and fixed April 12, 2018 for hearing.
