Senior Congress leader and Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain on Sunday faced peoples’ anger while trying to criticise the party’s rival All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

The incident took place at Chirang district in Western Assam where the Minister was invited to speak as a chief guest by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) in a function to mark its 33rd annual convention.

“While delivering his speech, Hussain referred to the ethnic riots that rocked the State last year and said that it was the Congress who did the real riot control but accused the AIUDF of playing politics over the riots,” said AAMSU president

Abdur Rahim while talking to The Pioneer.

“Irked by the Minister’s comment on the AIUDF leader Moulana Badaruddin Ajmal, the people started hurling shoes, sandals and empty water bottles at the Minister,” Rahim said, adding that the AAMSU as well as the police intervened immediately to control the irate mob.

Some of the AIUDF supporters also targeted the Minister while he was leaving the meeting venue moments later, by again by hurling mud and pelting stones at him and his convoy.

The Minister, however, managed to escaped unhurt.Hussain later told media that there is nothing new in the incident and that several Congress leaders had to face such problems in the past. “There are people everywhere, who wants to create problems but we have to move forward,” said the Minister.
