After the publication of National Register Of Citizens (NRC), the Assam Government has shifted the focus to NRC Seva Kendras in Assam, where over 40 lakh people — whose name did not figure in the document — will throng from August 7 to know the reasons for non inclusion of their names.
The Assam Government has decided to give ample opportunity to those whose name did not figure in the document and accordingly the applicants can file claim and objectiond till September 28 to enter their names in the NRC.
The Assam Government published the NRC on July 30 which included the names of over 2.89 crore people but left over 40 lakh people out of the document for some discrepancies. There are a little over 2,500 NRC Seva Kendras in Assam which will be handling the claims and objections directly. The Supreme Court who has been monitoring the updation process of the NRC has recently ordered the Government, in consultation with State NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela, to frame a ‘fair’ standard operating procedure (SOP) to deal with the claims and objections of those who did not find their names in the draft NRC.
The Seva Kendras will be have an application form , where a person will provide his detail and the reason for his non-inclusion will be provided,” said NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela while adding that they can also file claim and objection from August 30 till September 28.
“We are anticipating that there will be rush initially as people will be wanting to know the reasons for non inclusion and accordingly we have made arrangements to address the grievances,” he said while adding that the NRC directorate is presently busy framing the SOP to deal with claim and objections.
“Security of the seva kendras have been intensified. We have reviewed the security of Seva Kendras and police pickets are posted outside Kendras,” said Assam’s Additional director general of Assam Police (special branch) Pallab Bhattacharya.
“Different districts have prepared vulnerability reports and identified sensitive pockets. These pockets is monitored and reviewed. Vigil is maintained on movements,” he said adding that interstate border districts are maintaining strict vigil.
It may be mentioned here that the Central Government has rushed 220 companies of security forces to the State ahead of the July 30 — the day when the Government had published the NRC. Although nothing untoward happened, the forces are likely to stay for few days.
