ADMK MPs urge PM to summon Sri lanka's High Commissioner

PNS

AIADMK MPs on Friday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the summoning of Sri lanka’s High Commissioner to raise protest on the lankan Navy’s firing on Tamil Nadu fishermen.

The six-page memorandum signed by all MPs submitted on behalf of party supremo J Jayalalithaa detailed the atrocities of the lankan Navy to the poor fishermen from the State and alleged that firing happened during when the talks were going on between the fishermen associations and Indian and lankan Governments for permanent solution to the problem.

In Parliament too AIADMK MPs protested against the incident in both the Houses. In lok Sabha, the party raised the issue during Zero Hour amid din over the demonetisation move of the Government.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said he would convey the concerns of the AIADMK members to the Defence Minister and the External Affairs Minister.

“On behalf our leader Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, we strongly urge you to direct the Ministry of External Affairs to summon the Sri lankan High Commissioner to India and covey out strong protest against this shocking incident. The fishermen communities of Tamil Nadu are in a state of shock after this incident and we expect that the Government of India will act immediately and strongly in response,” said the MP’s memorandum to the PM, adding that the sensitive Kathcatheevu Island should be retrieved by cancelling the Indo-Sri lanka agreement of 1974.
