Some political party had hired contract killers to assassinate Mamata Banerjee, the Bengal Chief Minister told in an explosive interview to a local television channel.

Speaking to the Bangla channel the Chief Minister said "it will be beneath my dignity and beyond decorum to name such party but I have information that some political party has hired what you call in common language 'supari killers' to eliminate me."

Banerjee added "the suspected assailants have also done a recce of my house which is why the police have asked me to change my residence."

The Chief Minister who sustained severe head injuries in attack by alleged CPI(M) goons in the early 1990s said "no one leader bears more injury marks than I do on one's person, thanks to repeated attacks on me by the CPI(M). But that has never bothered me. Once they almost killed me."

On whether she would like to name the political party she said she would not because that was "beyond political decorum." But "one thing I can tell you that they have already given the advance to the killers," she said adding "these parties first indulge in character assassination. But when they fail they take the ultimate step to assassinate a person physically."

Banerjee had on several occasions alleged attempts on her life like once she did a couple of years ago when her flight was made to hover over NSI Airport in Kolkata for half an hour on account of congestion at the terminal.
