3-month bail for Kodnani on medical grounds

PNS

Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted three-month temporary bail to Maya Kodnani, a convict in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case on medical grounds. A division bench of justices KS Jhaveri and KJ Thaker, after hearing temporary bail application seeking six months relief, granted only three-month bail.

Kodnani’s advocate Hardik Dave submitted that she was suffering with tuberculosis of intestine apart from heart disease and depression. Dave also submitted relevant medical documents to the court. The 58-year-old gynecologist is currently under treatment in an Ahmedabad-based hospital.

The bail application was filed in the last week of October, but hearing was taken up only on November 12 due to the Diwali vacation.

The Special Investigation Team probing the riot cases, however, opposed the bail plea, saying that the treatment can be made available to her as per jail manual. After examining documents and hearing arguments from both the sides, the court granted three-month conditional bail to Kodnani.
