At least two persons were killed and five others were injured when suspected militants triggered a powerful explosion near a bus stand in Manipur’s capital Imphal on Wednesday morning.
Police said that the blast took place at Moirangkhom Bus Stand in Imphal town around 6.20 am. While one person died on the spot, six others were seriously injured in the incident, police said adding that one of the injured later died on way to the hospital.
The conditions of some of the injured were stated to be serious, police said. Interestingly, the blast took place within one-km radius of the official residence of Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh — a high security zone.
“The militants might have wanted to target the security personnel,” said a senior police official while adding that preliminary investigation indicated it to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The blast was triggered through a timer device, he added.
On Tuesday, suspected militants triggered yet another powerful blast in Imphal injuring five persons. Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had reviewed the law and order situation of the State on Tuesday in view of the blast.
On September 10 this year, militants triggered a powerful blast in the Manipur capital town killing nine migrant labourers and injuring several others.
