PNS

Reacting on the vision loss episode at a trust run hospital in Rajkot, the Gujarat Government on Tuesday ordered an inquiry.

As many as 12 people lost vision last week during a cataract removal camp at Sadhu Vasvani Hospital in Rajkot. The episode came into limelight only on Monday, following the victims and their families rushed to the hospital and started complaining about blindness.

In the past one week as many as 25 persons were operated for removal of cataract camp organised by the hospital. When they returned for follow-up checking and treatment, 12 of the persons complained of complete loss of vision. On Tuesday the State Government also announced that the patients would be treated for restoration of their vision at Government’s cost.

The State Government has also sent a team of four eye-surgeons from the Ahmedabad civil hospital to Rajkot to conduct an inquiry as also to suggest remedial measures.

After examining all the 12 persons who had complained of complete loss of vision, the visiting doctors said there was hope for the revival of vision of two of them while the prospect of reviving the vision of the remaining ten persons appeared dim.

Knowing the seriousness and fearing anger of patients’ relatives, the doctors who performed cataract surgery have gone underground.
