‘Bid to take political mileage from hooch deaths’

Pioneer News Service

A joint Opposition of 14 political parties on Tuesday condemned the alleged brazen attempt to seek political mileage from a devastating tragedy like hooch tragedy in Bihar and also condemned the use of the NHRC in a brazenly partisan and political manner which is an insult to the memory of those who have died as well as their families.

The Opposition leaders said it is apparent that NHRC is being sent only to the non-BJP ruled states as the intent seems to be only to destabilise the opposition ruled Governments. Sadly, NHRC and NCPCR appear to have become the latest tools in the hands of the Modi Government after using ED, CBI, IT etc to target political opponents since last 8 years. We hope the Modi Government will introspect and deploy valuable public resources towards serving the people instead of towards securing its own electoral prospects, the parties said through a statement.

Earlier in the day the entire Opposition walked out from the Rajya Sabha at the end of the morning session alleging that the NHRC only visits Opposition-ruled States for investigations while skipping BJP-governed Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Dola Sen of the TMC, while making her Zero Hour submission, said it is unfortunate that the NHRC is visiting Bihar and goes to Bengal, but does not visit Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
