Bhagwant's faux pas

Aam Aadmi Party is wasting time on non-issues

The recent incident of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Bhagwant Mann, making a video on Parliament accompanied with a running commentary is a serious violation of sensitive security protocols by someone who should have otherwise helped protect the sanctity of the same. His tendering of an unconditional apology to the Speaker of the lok Sabha highlights the fact that he has already committed a grave mistake which is uncalled for from a person of his stature. It is widely felt across the political spectrum that Mann was intentionally making a ‘mockery of the security system' currently in place in the high sensitive security zone in the Parliament complex. In the meantime, the entire party rallying behind him, saying it is a ‘non-issue' is in a way belittling the pride and prestige of Parliament, the temple of democracy of the people of India. In fact, the AAP accusing the Modi Government for targeting the party and trying to deflect attention from the Dalit protests in Gujarat is absolutely incorrect. Because, the Union Government cannot hide what has happened and it has been widely covered by the media. And when, no political party is prohibited from raising questions and counter questions in Parliament on any issue, why the AAP is simply harping on an anti-Modi agenda all the timeIJ It is high time; the AAP must discipline its own house and its representatives who are always in the public light mostly for wrong reasons. Also sharing the video in social media may directly provide information to anti-national elements which are working round the clock to destabilise the entire nation. Before posting such vital information with video footage, the honourable MP should have thought at least once that this could be an asset for terrorist organisations for may be planning another devastating attack on Parliament. Ironically, the MP saying, he made the ‘mistake inadvertently' and only for an educational purpose can be an excuse and no one should believe it. He and his party must note that the very process of the day-to-day functioning of Parliament, particularly the methods of selection of questions from an MP could have been made to known to the public in a much better and easier way than shooting a video.

While stressing on a severe punishment and warning to Mann, we must bring it to public notice how vulnerable our Parliament is which houses VVIP's, including the Prime Minister. Surprisingly, the AAP MP was not spotted by any security camera or personnel when he was making a video for more than 10 minutes. It may so happen that he may have been spotted and the security agencies have allowed him to run the video. There must be a through enquiry and it must be brought to the public the motive behind filming the inner functioning and security checks of Parliament, the country's most prestigious institution. The decision taken by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to suspend and not allow him to attend the Monsoon Session of Parliament till the probe into the incident is complete, should be well appreciated and is timely. Hope the nine-member committee, headed by BJP MP Kirit Somaiya that is probing the faux pas brought by Mann, comes up with substantial measures so that such ‘careless acts of high risk' can be prevented in future from the country's lawmakers for sure.
