To earn quick money to buy drugs, a 22-year-old drug addict allegedly took to stealing his father’s mobile phone at their residence in Outer Delhi’s Aman Vihar area. A fortnight later, Delhi Police arrested Mukesh Kumar.
Talking about the case, a senior police officer said, “At the behest of a friend, the complainant Ram Shankar approached the local police and claimed that his phone was snatched. The complainant was under the impression that the cops will find his phone more quickly if the case is registered under sections of snatching as opposed to that of theft.”
Unaware that his son was the thief, Ram Shankar on the instance of a friend had called police the next day and complained stating that his mobile phone was allegedly snatched by two bike-borne persons in the Suleman Nagar area while he was out buying groceries in the evening. The Delhi Police said Mukesh was arrested on Tuesday and was granted bail by the concerned court on Wednesday. “The complainant, father of the accused pleaded guilty on behalf of his son. Following which, Mukesh was granted bail.”
Police said the incident took place on March 6 but Ram Shankar reported the matter of the so called theft of his Fly mobile phone only on the next day. Following which a case was registered at the Aman Vihar police station.
Keeping in mind increasing incidents of snatching of mobile phones in the area, the case was handed over to the Operation Cell unit of the Outer district.
“Based on technical surveillance, we found that Mukesh was in possession of the stolen mobile phone and had given it to one of his friends. Until the time Mukesh was arrested, he had planned to sell his father’s mobile phone to someone else to make money for buying drugs, said Pankaj Singh, Additional DCP 1 (Outer).
