Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) president Shakti Singh on Monday met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who assured him of constructing a hostel on UP Government’s land in Delhi that can house 1,000 students.
“The hostel would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 46 crore and Chief Minister has ordered officials to get in touch with Delhi University (DU) administration to send a proposal regarding the same at the earliest," said Singh.
Talking to The Pioneer, Shakti Singh also briefed the CM about the problems students from other States facing in Delhi, due to the shortage of hostel berths. "I met him with a proposal to build hostels for outstation students studying in DU and also told him about the estimated cost for the same. The demands were well received by the CM," said the DUSU president.
"Demand for hostels has always been one of the core agenda of ABVP. Acceptance and recognition of this proposal by the UP Government has ignited hopes for better and affordable stay among out-stationed students and it is a victory in itself. DUSU is expecting this proposal taking shape at the earliest once necessary formalities are completed," he said.
"CM has given assurance and has also directed his officials to speak to University officials at the earliest. The outstation students studying in DU are faced with immense problem in getting accommodation in hostels as there are limited seats. The hostels of varsity are not at par with number of outstation students. Forced by the situation they have to reside in private accommodations which costs heavily on their pocket," said Singh.
