A 25-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped in Greater Noida by an engineer and his friends on the pretext of marriage. The victim was in the city after her return from Agra when the accused and his friends forcibly trapped her in a flat and did the unthinkable. She somehow managed to escape from their clutches when they attempted to kill her. She approached police to lodge a complaint against the engineer who is still at large. The woman, a resident of Mumbai, said they both met on a social networking site and that the engineer had promised to wed her.
According to police, the incident was reported on late Thursday night when the victim approached police. The victim, in her complaint, said Sanjeev, an engineer at a private firm, befriended her online a year back and proposed marriage to her. Earlier in November, the couple visited Agra. After their return, he outraged her modesty and kept her captive in Delta-I Sector. later, four friends of his along with the engineer gang-raped her over several days and threatened to kill the woman if she ratted out. The girl also alleged Sanjeev had taken Rs12 lakh from her and divested her of her ornaments.
“Although the rape can be confirmed after a medical exam, we have booked the accused under Sections 324, 376D and 504 and have initiated a manhunt. We are questioning neighbours of the the accused for leads,” said a senior police official of Greater Noida police.
Meanwhile, the victim has alleged it took nearly four weeks to file an FIR since police turned a deaf ear to her pleas. “I have visited the police station several times but police officials were not ready to lodge a complaint. I approached senior police officials as well. I was just assured that the matter would be looked into. In quiet desperation, I approached the media and could get a word in edgeways,” said the victim.
In another incident of gang-rape, a 35-year-old married woman was allegedly abducted by five men and gang-raped at a secluded place. The victim, a resident of Phase-II, was abducted from Noida and raped in New Delhi. The victim, in her plaint, alleged that the accused had also robbed her of her valuables.
