In a tragic incident, a 48-year-old Government schoolteacher and her daughter committed suicide by hanging themselves at their residence in Old Roshanpura, Najafgarh, in South West Delhi area.
The victims have been identified as Anita and her 18-year-old daughter Siya.
Their bodies were taken to Rao Tula Ram Hospital in Jaffarpur Kalan for post-mortem after which their bodies were handed over to the relatives. A three-page suicide note has also been recovered from their residence but the reason behind this suicide is not known yet.
The incident came to light on Monday morning when her husband Satpal Yadav, principal of Government Boys school at Nazafgarh, tried calling his family to tell them that he has arrived in Delhi. Satpal and his son, Aditya, a second-year MBBS student had left for Jaipur for the latter’s respiratory problem treatment.
Aditya is said to be suffering from breathing related problems and was seeking treatment from a hospital in Jaipur.
Since nobody answered Satpal’s calls, he asked his neighbour, Ishwar Singh to enquire. Ishwar tried to reach the family however his calls went unanswered after which the police was called to the spot. “I knocked on the door several times and even made several phone calls but nobody answered the door. So I made a call around 7.15 am to police. We entered the house and saw both of them had committed suicide, said Ishwar Singh.
The police then informed Satpal about the incident. “The house was locked from the inside so we had to break it open. We found the mother and daughter had hung themselves,” said a senior police official.
“We would never know about what went in their family. They never interacted with us and would keep to themselves. We knew that Anita was a teacher in the local school and would leave her house in the morning with her daughter,” said a neighbour.
Neighbours and relatives suspect that the family may have been depressed over the son’s health which may have been the cause for the extreme step.
Meanwhile, based on the post-mortem report the police have maintained that this was a case of suicide by hanging. “We have conducted their post-mortem report and preliminary observations it appears to be a case of suicide by hanging. Further investigation is under way,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Surender Kumar.
