The AAP Government will develop the national Capital as the centre of world-class teacher education and the Delhi Teachers University (DTU) will make this vision a reality, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Tuesday.

Sisodia said that the education sector is dominated by Finland, Singapore, Japan, America and European countries today. The DTU would be the answer for India. “This would allow India to be considered among the top countries of the world in the field of teachers’ education,” he said.

The first meeting of the Board of Management of DTU was held on Tuesday regarding this vision. In his message to the Board, Sisodia said that the aim of this university, established by the Delhi Government is to create a world-class institution in the field of teacher education as good as premium institutes like IIT-IIM. He said that the DTU would emerge as a brand for teacher education all over the world.

He further said that the teaching profession has become the last career resort for everyone today. “The DTU will change this perspective. It will encourage the youth towards the teaching profession and produce hundreds of excellent teachers in every session.

Such excellent teachers will further prepare the future of the country for the coming tomorrow by delivering quality education to their students,” he added.

The DTU will collaborate with national and international organisations to provide world-class training to trainees as well as to exchange new ideas and practices. In the Board meeting, it was agreed that unlike most of the teacher training programs currently offered in the country, the courses offered at the DTU will not focus solely on subject knowledge but on capacity building of trainees as well. Trainees would be equipped with practical skills so that they can be better prepared for classroom teaching.

It was also discussed that the DTU would not only emphasise on teacher-training but also focus on fundamental and applied research in the field of education, Sisodia’s office said in a statement.

On this occasion, the Vice-Chancellor of DTU, Dhananjay Joshi said that the DTU would work to fulfil the vision of Delhi Government for education and would emerge as the best institution of teacher education not only in India but in the world. Tamil Nadu Teachers University Vice-Chancellor Professor N Panchanatham said that DTU will offer new-age courses by creating a multidisciplinary eco-system as per the recommendations of NEP 2020.

The Delhi Assembly in January passed a Bill for setting up a world-class teachers' training university. The university will offer teacher education programmes such as BA-BEd and BSc-BEd to create a new generation of teachers.

Students of the university will collaborate with Delhi Government schools for the duration of their courses and get hands-on experience with a focus on research.
