Why the North is worst hit

With mounting dengue cases creating panic across the national Capital, North Delhi Municipal Corporation is the worst hit with total 776 dengue cases.

As many as 301 cases were recorded this week.

While Hindu Rao hospital alone registered 120 cases in last 24 hours, Kasturba hospital recorded five. Moreover, the corporation which began fogging after as many as 831 cases of dengue were recorded has failed to tackle the deadly disease. Narela, Civil lines, Rohini, Paharganj and Karol Bagh zones fall under the jurisdiction of North Corporation.

Narela zone alone recorded 30 positive cases of dengue last week. Total number of cases has reached 164, the highest across North Civic Body. The industrial development in Narela has thrown open a ground for mosquito breeding.

The industrial development in this area is one of the biggest reasons for mosquito breeding. When a construction is carried out in an area, there are more chances of water being accumulated in that particular area which leads to mosquito breeding," said Yogender Singh Mann, said North Civic Body Director and Public Relations Officer.

Moreover, the residential areas are reeling under open drains, poor sewage system are one of the reasons for heavy mosquito breeding. The stored or stagnant water in any area is conducive for deadly dengue mosquitoes.

Officials in the North corporations also tried to justify their ground and said the reason behind high number of cases being recorded under North is because it has more number of hospitals as compared to areas under East and South corporations.

Rohini zone recorded a total of 60 cases with this week reporting 21cases. While a section of Rohini can boast for city's developed infrastructure, the not-so-developed areas have a different story to tell. Unplanned construction, improper sanitation and sewage system is one of the reasons for mosquito breeding in this area. "Fogging has not been carried out with due diligence here else I think the impact of dengue would not have been so high. There is a nullah near our house and it's about time that it should be closed but the municipal corporation has not paid heed," said Rinki Jha, a local.

Accumulation of industrial waste behind factories and buildings has added to dengue woes with North Corporation not carrying proper fumigation. The industrial plant in Bawana has seen a spurt in dengue cases.

"No proper awareness programme or fogging was carried out by MCD. We could have prevented this outbreak as last year the number of cases were not this high," said Pradeep, a resident of Burari. Kirari and Burari regions too have reported high number of dengue cases, according to MCD officials.

Paharganj and Karol Bagh zones have recorded 11 and 49 cases of dengue till now.  Around nine cases were registered in Paharganj last week with Karol Bagh falling prey to 24 dengue cases. "lack of cleanliness by people and construction could be one of the reasons for high number of cases," said an official.

North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta, however, maintained that North Corporation has not failed to tackle dengue. "The fumigation programme had been intensified in areas where higher number of cases has been found. We are taking all possible measures to deal with the increasing number of dengue cases and on Sunday an intensive fogging drive will be carried in all those areas of North where heavy mosquito breeding has been detected," he said.
