Staff Reporter

Investigators have not been able to make any major headway in the firing incident that took place on BJP MlA Jitender Singh Shunty outside his residence in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area in which he had a narrow escape.

According to a senior police official, on the basis of the statements and description provided by Shunty and some of his neighbours, sketches of the attacker and his associates who had waited for him in a white car have been made by the police. The case is being investigated from all possible angles. An extortion bid or an old enmity could also be behind the attack. Several other possibilities have not been ruled out. Investigators are trying to trace the accused with the help of these sketches. Police have also examined the CCTV footage of the surrounding areas and it has emerged that the white colour car was a Volkswagen Vento car which had been making making regular rounds and the assailants had carried out a detailed récce before going ahead with the attack. The police are also scanning the CCTV footage of Shunty’s residence as he had around seven cameras placed at different locations. Since a reece of the area must have been conducted, police officials are trying to ascertain the movement of people and vehicles in and around his area.  During investigations, it has also emerged that the attacker spoke in a Haryanvi accent.

However, the exact registration number of the car could not be identified in the footage as the cameras of the nearby shops were fixed. There are also chances that the attackers might have used a stolen vehicle or used a fake number plate. One of Shunty’s neighbours had told police that the car was of Haryana registration number. Meanwhile, Delhi Police has provided two PSOs to Shunty who will remain with him 24x7. Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has also spoken to Shunty over phone and assured him of speedy probe in the case and foolproof security to him.
